Basic Estimating of Electrical Construction

Course Description:

Small mistakes in an estimate can have a huge impact on your bid’s bottom line. This course provides the tools needed to be both comprehensive and competitive. Attendees will be guided through the estimating process including developing material lists, applying labor unit data, material takeoff and application of direct job costs, overhead, and profit. Upon completion, attendees will gain knowledge of avoiding estimating mistakes, describe the parts of an estimate, explain the importance of establishing the true cost of a project, provide job management information, discuss labor units to competitively bid projects, and explain the difference between a competitive bid and a low bid.

Target Audience:

Individuals who are new to estimating or are looking to hone their skills.

Prerequisites:

An understanding of electrical construction, the application of electrical material, and completion of NECA National’s Introduction to the Manual of Labor Units online course.

Online Prerequisite: (completed prior to the course)

All registrants will be required to take an hour-long, online portion of the Basic Estimating course prior to attending the “live” class. This prerequisite will allow students to have the same basic information prior to the classroom instruction. Instructions for the prerequisite course will be sent to all attendees via email from the NECA National Education office (education@necanet.org) two weeks prior to the start date of the seminar. In additional to the prerequisite information, the NECA National Education office will send instructions on downloading all required course content.

Computer Requirements and Supplies Needed:

• A laptop or tablet capable of running the current version of Microsoft Excel and ability to open PDF files
• Computer browser of Chrome or Firefox
• Operating Systems – Windows 7, 8, 8.1, or 10
• A measuring device, such as a roller-meter multi-scale or hard-sided scale (measurements of 1/8″, ¼”, ½”; 1:10 and 1:30 scales)
• Hand tally counter
• Highlighters (yellow, orange, pink, blue, green, and purple)
• Red pen or pencil
• Pencil and eraser
• Calculator

Certificate of Completion Requirements:

• Attend 90% of course
• Sign in and out, providing full contact information
• Participate fully in class discussions and activities
• Fill out the online evaluation following the course

If you need hotel reservations, a block of rooms is reserved under code 2010WICHAP. The rate for a room is $95 for an expanded king sofa room. Rooms will be released after October 18, 2020; prices are then subject to the prevailing room rate. To avoid fees, cancellations must be received 24 hours prior to arrival date.

Continuing Education Hours. Attendance is limited to 25.

Course Cancellation Policy: There will be no charge for cancellations made by Tuesday, October 13, 2020. Any
cancellations made Wednesday, October 14 through Friday, October 23, 2020 will be charged a cancellation fee of $99. Any cancellations made Monday, October 26, 2020 and after, as well as no-shows, will be charged the full registration price. Attendee substitutions are welcome at any time.
